Gibson takes Palin quote totally out of context

It was an amazing moment in this campaign. Charlie Gibson got caught on national TV distorting Sarah Palin's quote in order to make it appear as if she is some kind of kookie religious fanatic.

Here is the exchange:

Gibson: "You said recently, in your old church, "Our national leaders are sending U.S. soldiers on a task that is from God." Are we fighting a holy war? "

Palin: "You know, I don't know if that was my exact quote."

Gibson: "Exact quote."

Sorry, Charlie, not good enough. You don't get to choose which part of the sentence you quote in order to change the meaning of the words.

Here is what Palin said at her church:

"Pray for our military men and women, who are striving to do what is right also for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending them out on a task that is from God--that's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan. So bless them with your prayers, your prayers of protection for our soldiers."

This couldn't be more clear. She is obviously saying "Pray that our leaders are sending them out on a task that is from God." That is just a tad different from saying "They are on a task from God."

Typical mainstream media treatment of religious politicians. Try to make them seem like religious fanatics.

I hope Gibson loses even more credibility from this, because what he did is essentially a bald-faced lie dressed up in an out of context quote.

Outrageous.

I'm not too concerned about the way the questions were asked. Typical ABC type quiz. Palin did fine. Even the evil pundit James Carville gave her a C-. He has never given a conservative a passing grade before. They will ocntinue to twist her words, and it will continue to be transparent when they do.

This is the best example ever of a lie of omission.

Most people define the truth as:

The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

Charlie's definition:
The truth, and nothing but the truth, and not anything extra that, while truthful, does not move my agenda forward.

Charlie Gibson is a LIAR.

Lies of omission are just as dishonest as lies of comission.

This entire discussion shows just how far we have traveled down the road of secularism. When this country was founded, the leaders of that day would not have hesitated to state publicly their conviction that the direction they had chosen was what they believed to be the will of God and to ask for God's blessing on their efforts.

I would hate to engage in a major undertaking that involved the investment of thousands of lives, if I did not believe that the effort was no the will of God.

Admittedly, throughout history many evil things have been done by fools who wrongly believed that they were doing the work of God. Sometimes, ony history accurately judges such things. But that does not mean that God does not have a will or that it is impossible to know that will. It only means that it is possible to be mistaken in that assessment.

Sarah Palin said what she said. Gibson distorted it. But even if she had said what he implied, it would not be inconsistent with the utterances of some of the greatest presidents in American history.

The secular progressives in the media are all bent out of shape about the idea that conservatives evoke God's name and ask for his blessing on our men and women in combat.

Well, it shouldn't come as news to them that even liberal Democrats pray for our troops and their mission.

If it were up to them, we'd never pray for anyone, and assume that God doesn't even exist.

They roundly demonize religious people (unless you are Muslim or some religion that calls for the taking of "psychadelic drugs").

They even occassionally "fawn" over the terrorists who use "God" as their justification for blowing up women, children, and other innocents; citing their fanaticism as something we should respect and admire (that's right, Keith Olberman).

Sarah Palin is speaking no differently than millions of other Americans like myself who pray for our military's safety and for the justice of their mission.

To paint her as calling for a "crusade" is just a cheap-shot at her religious beliefs, and a feeble attempt to make her look like a religious nut.

I encourage them to keep it up; it'll only reaffirm how out of touch the Beltway media is with most of our country.

Most of America believes in God and thinks it is not only reasonable to pray for our troops, but usually assume that is a positive thing.

Obama himself claims to be a Christian, and I would bet if he is what he claims to be, he has said a prayer or two for our troops over the years. And I for one, think that is great.

Charlie Gibson will face his creator someday and will have to answer for not only his lies, but for his attempt to use a deeply personal plea for our troops as a way to discredit a very good woman.

I guess I'm an idiot but I don't understand your logic at all.

"This couldn't be more clear. She is obviously saying "Pray that our leaders are sending them out on a task that is from God." That is just a tad different from saying "They are on a task from God."

First, Gibson quoted her exactly. You don't dispute that, right?

So then we have to try to interpret context and meaning. Your interpretation makes no sense to me at all. She seems to be suggesting it's God's plan, right?

Are you an idiot? There's nothing complicated here.

Gibson claimed Palin said "Our national leaders are sending U.S. soldiers on a task that is from God."
Palin actually said to Pray that they are.
Like pray that we are doing the right thing.

Yet you, like Gibson, want Palin to have declared it was God's plan.

Gibson and his "editor" edited entire portions of this interview, not just this one statement. They edited out entire statements and partial sentences. You may google, Palin interview unedited to find the real interview.

In the least the entire "interview" is intellecturally dishonest and borders on fraud.

The MSM is in the process of killing the entire profession. Ethics anyone??? Oh yeah right, those ethics go out the window when it does not fit the liberal agenda.

The “Bush Doctrine” question, among others was unprofessional. Mr. Gibson didn’t know enough about the “Bush Doctrine” to field a question. Mr. Gibson had to answer Governor Palin’s question about specifics, with yet another question. Either Charlie Gibson was unprepared to articulate the “Bush Doctrine,” or so intent on leading the interview or both was he, that when Ms. Palin asked for clarification Charlie blew it. By tossing the erroneous question back into her lap, Mr. Gibson appeared at least a lazy journalist. So, I’m not surprised Charlie Gibson misquoted the prayer either. Sarah Palin did an excellent job of articulating her take on the “Bush Doctrine.” Don’t do your homework, it’ll show. And, and I noticed the demeaning TV camera techniques. One might have expected a hint of impartiality; I instead had to do a double take to see whether they in fact hadn’t sawed the legs off Ms. Palin’s chair: http://theseedsof9-11.com

I'm glad she's been picked as the running mate - the republican party has no chance of being elected with this small minded, intolerant lamb who's gone a long way on good looks and pandering to a select group of the electorate.

I look forward to more interviews demonstrating her lack of knowledge about anything other than her immediate vicinity. She's pure comedy I'm afraid and I'm just amazed such a dire pick from the candidates available was made.

In a YouTube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QG1vPYbRB7k), she does say "I think God's will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built (period or comma)S(s)o pray for that." To me, she is saying that she believes the building of the pipeline is God's will. I'm inclined, therefore, to think that Palin sees her beliefs/policies/goals as God's will. I think it's therefore likely, regardless of how one interprets what she said that Gibson was referring to, that she sees the war as God's will.
